EV Charging Time Calculator
Calculate electric vehicle charging duration based on charger power and battery size
Formula
Charging Time:
$$Time = \frac{Battery (kWh) \times (End\% - Start\%)}{Charger Power (kW) \times Efficiency}$$
About this Calculator
Calculate how long it takes to charge your electric vehicle at home or at public charging stations. Compare charging times between Level 1, Level 2, and DC fast charging.
How to Use
- Enter your vehicle's battery capacity
- Set the charger power (home: 3-7kW, Level 2: 7-22kW, DC: 50-350kW)
- Enter your current state of charge (SoC)
- Set your target SoC (80% is optimal for daily use)
- View the estimated charging time
Frequently Asked Questions
What charger power should I use?
Level 1 (home outlet): 1.4-2.4 kW, Level 2 (home/public): 3.7-22 kW, DC Fast: 50-350 kW. Most home charging is done at 7-11 kW overnight.
Why charge only to 80%?
Lithium-ion batteries charge fastest from 20-80%. Above 80%, charging slows significantly to protect battery health. Daily charging to 80% extends battery lifespan.
What affects charging efficiency?
AC charging: 85-95% efficient. DC fast charging: 90-98%. Cold batteries, high power, and battery conditioning reduce efficiency. Preconditioning before DC charging helps.
